Hyderabad Bungalow of Former CM Jayalalithaa Sealed After Pending Property Tax Notices
GHMC seals Hyderabad bungalow of late Jayalalithaa over Rs 1.5 crore unpaid property tax.
Officials in Hyderabad have sealed a bungalow once owned by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa over unpaid property tax amounting to approximately ₹1.5 crore. The dues, which have been pending for several years, prompted action after repeated notices to her legal heirs went unanswered.
According to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the Srinagar Colony property has been in default since 2017, with fresh reminders issued in February 2026. Despite these notices, no payment was made, leading civic officials to seal the property on Tuesday. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan confirmed that the action was part of a broader campaign against major property tax defaulters.
Sources indicated that the house had previously been leased to businessman Vijay Mallya, and officials believe the tax arrears began accumulating during that period. Commissioner Karnan stated, “We have served notices to all property tax defaulters to clear their dues before March 31. The pending dues on this property were ₹1.5 crore. We are acting against all who default under GHMC regulations.”

The sealing of Jayalalithaa’s bungalow is part of a larger GHMC drive across Hyderabad targeting residential and commercial properties with overdue taxes. In recent weeks, officials have sealed over 100 properties, including hotels, shopping complexes, office buildings, and educational institutions, with dues running into crores. In some cases, owners settled the dues immediately after their properties were sealed.
GHMC officials reported that property tax arrears within its jurisdiction have crossed ₹1,400 crore, spread across nearly 3.5 lakh properties. Combined with other municipal bodies around Hyderabad, the total outstanding amount exceeds ₹3,000 crore.
As part of the ongoing effort, GHMC is offering a one-time settlement scheme allowing property owners to waive interest charges if they clear their full tax dues before the deadline. Authorities have emphasized that the drive will continue until all significant arrears are recovered, reinforcing the civic body’s commitment to timely property tax collection.
