Heavy Rains Lash Kerala, One Dead as Fallen Tree Destroys Shed in Thrissur
Heavy overnight rains kill one in Thrissur as IMD issues red alert across five Kerala districts.
Heavy overnight rainfall continued to batter several parts of Kerala on Saturday, causing widespread waterlogging, uprooting trees, damaging houses, and disrupting normal life across multiple districts. Roads were submerged in many areas, affecting transportation and daily activities, while emergency teams remained on alert as the southwest monsoon intensified across the state.
The severe weather turned fatal in Thrissur district, where a tree collapsed onto a temporary shed in Manaloor. According to fire and rescue officials, the structure was destroyed when the tree fell during the early morning hours, killing a 29-year-old man who was sleeping inside. Authorities said strong winds and rain-soaked ground conditions have increased the risk of such incidents across Kerala.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for five districts—Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 centimeters within 24 hours. Several other districts remained under orange alert, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall between 11 and 20 centimeters.

In view of the worsening weather conditions, district administrations imposed a number of precautionary restrictions. Entry to trekking destinations was prohibited, quarrying activities were suspended, and night travel through hilly regions was banned in the Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod districts. Officials said the measures were necessary to reduce the risk of landslides, flash floods, and other rain-related accidents.
Educational institutions in the Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts were also ordered to remain closed on Saturday as a safety precaution. Disaster management authorities, police personnel, fire and rescue teams, and local administration officials have been deployed across vulnerable areas to monitor the situation and respond quickly to emergencies. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert to weather warnings.
A red alert signifies extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 centimeters in a 24-hour period, while an orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall between 11 and 20 centimeters. With forecasts suggesting continued heavy showers in several regions, authorities are closely monitoring conditions and urging people living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to follow official advisories as Kerala experiences one of the strongest monsoon spells of the season so far.
