Five Arunachal Pradesh Districts Affected By Fresh Floods And Landslides

Floods and landslides disrupt life across Arunachal Pradesh districts.

Fresh floods and landslides continued to batter several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, causing widespread damage to homes, roads, bridges and agricultural land, according to officials on Thursday. The latest incidents were reported from five districts—East Kameng, Upper Subansiri, Upper Siang, Kamle and Kra Daadi—following persistent heavy rainfall across the state. The ongoing monsoon-related disasters have so far claimed seven lives, injured 29 people and affected 1,03,860 residents, highlighting the severity of the situation and the challenges facing rescue and relief agencies.

According to the Arunachal Pradesh Disaster Management Department's daily situation report, Seppa and Bameng circles in East Kameng, Daporijo in Upper Subansiri, Mariyang, Migging and Tuting in Upper Siang, Gepen, Puchigeko and Raga in Kamle, and the Tali circle in Kra Daadi were among the worst-affected areas during the last 24 hours. Fresh flooding impacted 640 people in East Kameng and another 53 in Kamle. Authorities also reported significant damage to roads, drainage systems, irrigation channels, flood protection structures, retaining walls and several bridges, disrupting connectivity and public infrastructure.

Upper Siang remains the worst-affected district, with 49,259 people impacted, followed by Siang with 25,365, Kra Daadi with 13,731, East Kameng with 6,786, Upper Subansiri with 3,467, Namsai with 2,657 and Anjaw with 1,011 affected residents. Official data indicates that 804 houses have been damaged across the state, including 614 kutcha and 120 pucca structures. Floods and landslides have also affected roads, bridges, power infrastructure, government buildings, schools, hospitals, water supply schemes and flood protection works, causing extensive disruption to normal life.

The disaster has also taken a heavy toll on the state's agriculture and horticulture sectors. Officials said cumulative crop losses have reached 603.75 hectares, including 240 hectares of agricultural land and 363.75 hectares of horticulture plantations. The continued rainfall has hampered farming activities and increased the risk of further losses, while authorities remain engaged in assessing the full extent of the damage and coordinating relief measures for affected communities.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh over the next few days, with heavy to very heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning expected in several districts. An orange alert has been issued for Papum Pare, Tirap and Changlang on Friday, while similar warnings have been extended to Longding, East Siang, Lower Subansiri, Papum Pare, Tirap and Changlang on Saturday. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Lohit and Papum Pare.

Although weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Sunday, the IMD has advised district authorities and residents to remain vigilant, warning that intense rainfall could trigger fresh landslides, flash floods, waterlogging and disruption of road connectivity in vulnerable areas.
