Flash Floods And Landslides Devastate Lower Siang In Arunachal Pradesh

Flash floods and landslides cause severe disruption in Lower Siang, Arunachal Pradesh.

Flash floods and landslides have disrupted normal life across Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang district, affecting more than 3,100 people in at least 14 villages, officials said on Tuesday. The disaster has caused widespread damage to agricultural land, homes, and key public infrastructure, severely impacting rural communities in the Nari-Koyu assembly constituency.

According to District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO) Augusti Jamoh, the floods have destroyed large portions of wet rice cultivation fields along with private property and public utilities. Several villages, including Tabiripo Saku, Loglu, Rotte, Rame, and Koyu, have been cut off due to damaged or completely washed-out road links, leaving nearly 500 households isolated from essential services.

Officials confirmed that, so far, no casualties or injuries have been reported. However, the impact on livelihoods has been severe, with residents losing agricultural produce, livestock, and essential infrastructure. In Rotte village, significant portions of farmland have reportedly been washed away, along with horticulture gardens that serve as the primary source of income for many families.

The disaster has also led to the destruction of homes, vehicles, and community infrastructure. Several livestock, including pigs and poultry, were swept away in the deluge, while villagers were forced to evacuate and take temporary shelter in nearby paddy huts. In one incident, two houses were destroyed in a fire that broke out while residents were away, adding to the scale of damage in the affected region.

Critical infrastructure has also been severely impacted, with hanging bridges, culverts, electricity poles, and water supply systems destroyed in multiple villages. Rotte village has been completely cut off due to damaged access roads, leaving residents without reliable connectivity or basic services. Power and communication lines have also been disrupted in several areas.

In response, the district administration has launched large-scale relief and restoration efforts in coordination with the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), state police, and local volunteers. Authorities are working to restore connectivity on a priority basis, while a detailed assessment of losses is underway to determine compensation and rehabilitation measures for affected families.
