Northeast Reels as Monsoon Floods Devastate Arunachal Pradesh and Assam

Heavy monsoon floods devastate Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, displacing thousands, damaging infrastructure.

Relentless monsoon rainfall has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, disrupting normal life, damaging infrastructure and leaving thousands of people affected. According to officials, at least 12 districts in Arunachal Pradesh have been battered by heavy rain, while nearly 45,000 people across five districts of Assam have been impacted by floodwaters. Roads, bridges and houses have suffered extensive damage as rescue and relief operations continue in the two northeastern states.

The severe weather has left several towns and villages cut off after flash floods and landslides washed away key road links and bridges. Residential houses, public infrastructure and agricultural land have also been damaged in multiple locations. Emergency teams have been deployed to restore connectivity and provide relief to stranded residents, while local authorities continue to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the ongoing monsoon.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the flood situation by speaking with the chief ministers of both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. During the discussions, he took stock of the damage caused by the heavy rains and assured the states of all possible assistance from the Central government. Authorities are coordinating relief efforts to support affected communities and restore essential services in flood-hit areas.

Among the worst-affected regions are low-lying areas where overflowing rivers have inundated villages, forcing many families to seek safer locations. Floodwaters have submerged roads and disrupted transportation, making it difficult for relief materials to reach several remote settlements. Rescue agencies and district administrations are working to evacuate vulnerable residents and provide food, shelter and medical assistance wherever required.

The India Meteorological Department has warned that the situation could worsen over the coming days, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, as well as sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. The weather agency has described the next five days as crucial and has advised state authorities to remain on high alert for further flooding, landslides and disruptions.

With the monsoon expected to remain active, disaster management teams are continuing rescue, relief and restoration operations across the affected states. Officials have urged residents living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to follow weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with evacuation efforts where necessary. Authorities are closely monitoring river levels and rainfall patterns as they prepare for the possibility of further heavy precipitation in the region.
