Mizoram Flood Crisis: Over 80 Families Forced To Leave Homes As Landslides Strike

Floods and landslides force evacuations across Mizoram.

More than 80 families have been evacuated to safer locations in Mizoram after heavy rainfall caused the Khawthlangtuipui river to overflow in Lunglei district, triggering floods and disrupting normal life. Officials said continuous rain over the past week has also led to landslides, rockfalls and road blockages across several parts of the state.

In Tlabung town of Lunglei district, located near the Bangladesh border, 42 families were shifted after rising river waters partially or completely submerged their homes. Another 40 families from Tipperaghat village under the Tlabung sub-division were also evacuated as flood conditions worsened.

Authorities said rain-related incidents have been reported from more than 29 locations across Mizoram. However, no casualties or loss of life have been reported so far. Disaster management teams and local authorities are monitoring affected areas and assisting residents moved from vulnerable locations.

Road connectivity has also been severely affected due to landslides. National Highway 54 was blocked following a major landslide near Bualte village in Lunglei district, leaving several tourists stranded for the past four days. The blockage has disrupted movement between the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha and the rest of the state.

The Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway was also closed after massive rockfall and landslides occurred at Ngaizel on the southern outskirts of Aizawl. The disruption came after persistent rainfall weakened slopes and caused debris to fall onto important road links.

Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) Minister Lalnilawma has urged residents to remain alert as rainfall continues across the state. After inspecting a landslide site near the Ngaizel filing station, the minister expressed concern over the difficulties faced by affected families and assured that financial assistance and relief measures would be provided promptly and transparently according to government guidelines.
