Amit Shah Visits BSF Sanchu Post, Reviews Border Security Operations In Rajasthan
Shah reviews border security and honours BSF personnel in Rajasthan.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah visited the historic BSF Sanchu Post along the India-Pakistan international border in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district on Tuesday, where he interacted with Border Security Force personnel and addressed the ‘Prahari Sammelan’. Accompanied by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the Home Minister praised the courage and commitment of soldiers deployed in the challenging desert terrain. The visit highlighted the government’s continued focus on strengthening border infrastructure and boosting troop morale in strategically sensitive regions. Shah also became the first Union Home Minister to visit the iconic Sanchu border outpost and directly engage with troops stationed there.
During his interaction with the personnel, Shah commended the BSF for safeguarding the nation’s borders under some of the harshest climatic conditions in the country. Addressing soldiers stationed at the desert frontier, he said India’s “Seema Praharis” have served with unwavering dedication from snow-covered mountains to scorching deserts where temperatures range from minus 45 degrees Celsius to over 45 degrees Celsius. He also paid tribute to nearly 2,000 personnel who lost their lives while performing border security duties. The Home Minister spent time speaking informally with troops, sharing refreshments and participating in a traditional breakfast at the border post.
As part of the programme, Shah virtually inaugurated 14 newly constructed women’s barracks at various BSF border outposts aimed at improving accommodation and operational facilities for female personnel. He also visited the ‘Prahari Arms Gallery’ and reviewed demonstrations of modern drone systems and advanced surveillance technologies being used for border monitoring and security management. Officials briefed him on evolving security challenges and technological upgrades along the India-Pakistan border. Amid temperatures nearing 42 degrees Celsius, Shah also used binoculars to inspect the ‘Zero Point’ area and discuss operational experiences with soldiers deployed in the sector.

The Home Minister also recalled the historical importance of the Sanchu Post, particularly its role during the 1965 India-Pakistan war. He noted that despite Pakistan’s attempts to capture the region, Indian forces successfully repelled the attack and forced enemy troops to retreat. Shah said the battle remains a proud chapter in India’s military history and continues to be commemorated annually through ‘Vijay Utsav’ and ‘Sanchu Diwas’. Describing the post as a symbol of valour and sacrifice, he said he had long wished to visit the location and was proud to finally fulfil that desire. The Sanchu Post remains one of the oldest and strategically significant BSF outposts along the western border.
During the visit, Shah also offered prayers at the Sanchu Mata Temple and planted a Khejri sapling within the border post premises as a message promoting environmental conservation in desert regions. Speaking about the significance of the tree, he described the Khejri as a “Kalpa Vriksha” for Rajasthan’s arid landscape because of its ecological and cultural importance. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, senior BSF officials, and administrative authorities were also present during the programme. The symbolic plantation activity added an environmental dimension to the otherwise security-focused visit.
Later in the day, Shah was scheduled to chair a high-level review meeting at the BSF Headquarters in Bikaner with district collectors and police superintendents from five border districts of Rajasthan. Discussions are expected to focus on border security preparedness, increasing incidents of smuggling, and implementation of the Vibrant Villages Programme across 184 border villages in the state. Officials are also likely to review progress on road development and 4G connectivity projects aimed at improving infrastructure and communication in remote border areas. The meeting is seen as part of the Centre’s broader effort to strengthen both security and development in strategically important frontier regions.
