Palestinian Girl's Mother Rejects Military Probe, Calls For Independent Inquiry Into Killing

Hind Rajab’s Mother Seeks Independent Death Probe

The mother of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl whose death in Gaza drew international attention, has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her killing. Her demand comes after Israel's military this week acknowledged firing at the family's vehicle as it attempted to flee an Israeli invasion and also firing towards an ambulance that had been dispatched to rescue the child. Hind Rajab became widely known after an emergency call in which she pleaded for help while trapped inside a car with members of her family.

The incident occurred during Israel's military operations in Gaza, where civilians have repeatedly been caught in areas affected by fighting and evacuation orders. Hind's case subsequently became a focus of international concern over the protection of children and other civilians during the conflict. According to accounts surrounding the incident, Hind was travelling with members of her family when their vehicle came under fire. The family's car was reportedly caught in an area where Israeli forces were operating as they attempted to escape.

Hind remained inside the vehicle after other members of her family were killed, and her desperate calls for assistance were later widely circulated. An ambulance was dispatched by the Palestine Red Crescent Society after rescuers received information that Hind was trapped and needed urgent medical assistance. The rescue effort, however, did not succeed. The ambulance crew was also killed, according to Palestinian officials, and Hind was later found dead inside the vehicle. The circumstances surrounding both the shooting of the family car and the ambulance have since been the subject of international scrutiny.

The Israeli military's admission this week that its forces fired at the family's vehicle and towards the ambulance represents a significant development in the case. The military's acknowledgement has renewed calls for a detailed examination of what happened, including the circumstances in which the shots were fired, the identities of those involved and whether the actions complied with international humanitarian law. Hind's mother has called for an independent probe rather than relying solely on an internal military assessment.

The case has become emblematic of the risks faced by children and emergency responders during the Gaza conflict. Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that fighting, military operations and restrictions on movement can make it extremely difficult for medical teams to reach injured civilians. Ambulance crews and other emergency workers have also faced deadly risks while attempting to provide assistance in areas affected by Israeli military operations.

Hind's death has continued to draw attention well beyond Gaza because of the recorded emergency call and the prolonged efforts to reach her. Her mother's demand for an independent investigation reflects a broader call from Palestinian families and rights advocates for accountability over civilian deaths during the conflict. The latest Israeli military admission is likely to intensify scrutiny of the incident and increase pressure for an investigation capable of establishing what happened to Hind, her family and the rescuers who attempted to reach her.
