Pakistan Steps Up Afghanistan Operations, Claims 29 Killed After Karachi Terror Strike

Pakistan claims 29 killed in Afghanistan ground operation.

Pakistan has reported a fresh escalation in cross-border military activity, claiming that its forces killed 29 militants in a ground operation inside Afghanistan, followed by what officials described as “calibrated strikes” on militant hideouts across the border. The development comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, which has seen repeated cycles of violence, retaliatory attacks and accusations between the two sides in recent years.

According to Pakistani security sources, the ground operation was conducted after intelligence inputs suggested the presence of armed groups linked to recent attacks on Pakistani territory. Authorities said the operation targeted multiple suspected militant positions in areas close to the border, with the aim of dismantling networks allegedly involved in cross-border terrorism. Officials further claimed that the follow-up strikes were carefully planned and limited in scope, focusing on what they described as “safe havens” used by militants operating against Pakistan.

However, independent verification of the casualty figures and operational details has not yet been provided by Afghan authorities or international observers. As is often the case in cross-border incidents in the region, both sides have historically issued conflicting statements, making it difficult to immediately confirm the extent of damage or the identities of those killed. The lack of independent confirmation has added uncertainty to the latest claims, even as tensions continue to rise.

The Pakistani government has framed the operation as part of its ongoing campaign to counter militancy and secure its western border. Officials said the actions were a direct response to recent violence, including an explosion in Karachi that killed Pakistani soldiers. Security agencies have argued that militant groups operating from across the border have repeatedly targeted Pakistani security forces and civilians, necessitating stronger countermeasures. The latest operation, they said, reflects a continuation of efforts to disrupt those networks.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained strained over mutual accusations regarding the presence and movement of militant groups along their shared border. Islamabad has frequently accused Kabul of allowing its territory to be used as a base for attacks inside Pakistan, while Afghan authorities have consistently denied these allegations and maintained that they are committed to preventing any cross-border militancy. The mistrust has contributed to recurring diplomatic friction and periodic military escalations, particularly in border regions where control is difficult to enforce.

The latest escalation comes just a day after an explosion in Karachi in which Pakistani soldiers were killed, further intensifying security concerns within Pakistan. That incident has added urgency to Islamabad’s counterterrorism posture, with officials linking domestic attacks to broader regional militant networks. Analysts note that such incidents often trigger rapid military responses, which in turn risk further destabilising already fragile border dynamics.

Security experts say the renewed cycle of attacks and counterstrikes highlights the continuing volatility of the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, where a mix of militant activity, political distrust and weak border enforcement contributes to instability. While Pakistan has intensified its operations to curb cross-border threats, the absence of coordinated mechanisms between the two countries continues to complicate efforts to achieve long-term security. With both sides remaining firm in their positions, the situation is likely to remain tense in the coming days, with the potential for further escalation if retaliatory actions continue.
