Pakistan Played Peacemaker Role In Iran-US Deal, Says PM Shehbaz Sharif

Sharif credits Pakistan for mediating Iran-US diplomatic engagement.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that Pakistan has emerged as a “peacemaker” on the global stage following its involvement in facilitating diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran. He made the remarks while addressing the passing-out parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, highlighting what he described as Islamabad’s growing role in regional stability efforts.

Sharif said recent diplomatic efforts contributed to a framework agreement between the US and Iran, which reportedly includes a roadmap for reaching a final settlement within 60 days. According to his statement, the talks were mediated by Qatar and Pakistan and were held in Switzerland last week under the framework of an Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on June 18. He presented the development as evidence of Pakistan’s constructive engagement in international diplomacy.

The Prime Minister also referred to the recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stating that it reflected recognition of Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue and easing tensions in the region. He suggested that such high-level exchanges underscored growing trust in Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and its efforts to contribute to stability in West Asia.

Alongside foreign policy remarks, Sharif also addressed Pakistan’s internal security situation, stating that the country was currently navigating complex and multi-layered challenges. He described these challenges as a combination of external pressures and internal threats, without offering further specifics, and emphasized the need for sustained vigilance and institutional strength to manage them effectively.

In a politically sensitive statement, Sharif also accused India of using “proxies” to destabilize Pakistan, though he did not provide evidence to support the claim. The remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the two neighbours, with Islamabad frequently raising concerns over alleged interference. New Delhi has consistently denied such accusations.
