Norwegian PM Highlights Growing India-Norway Cooperation During PM Modi Visit
Norwegian PM says PM Modi’s Oslo visit strengthens India-Norway partnership and shared global cooperation.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Monday highlighted the growing strategic partnership between India and Norway during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that PM Modi’s visit reflects shared ambitions to deepen cooperation across key global and economic issues. He said the engagement comes at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, protectionism, and global uncertainty, making stronger partnerships between democracies more important than ever. Støre noted that both countries are working to expand cooperation despite differences in geography, size, and history. He also emphasized that the visit marks an important step in strengthening long-term bilateral ties.
The Norwegian Prime Minister stressed that India and Norway must stand together in defending a rules-based international order and oppose the use of diplomacy, trade, and technology as tools of coercion. He warned against the growing tendency of “weaponising” global systems in international relations and said both countries share a responsibility to promote stability. According to him, discussions during the visit included major global conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. He also appreciated continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries on addressing international security and economic challenges.
Støre further stated that while India and Norway may not always agree on every issue, both remain committed democratic partners that resolve differences through dialogue and mutual respect. He underlined that cooperation delivers better results than isolation or unilateral approaches, particularly in addressing global challenges such as climate change, security risks, and economic disruptions. The Norwegian leader said that democratic values provide a strong foundation for bilateral cooperation, even when policy approaches differ. He added that both countries benefit from maintaining open and consistent diplomatic communication.

The Prime Minister of Norway also described PM Modi’s visit as a reflection of the “growing partnership” between the two countries and their shared ambition to expand cooperation across multiple sectors. He noted that the relationship between India and Norway is evolving beyond traditional diplomacy into a broader strategic framework. Both sides are expected to sign and reaffirm several agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Støre highlighted that sustained engagement between the two governments will help convert shared priorities into concrete outcomes.
In addition, Støre announced that India and Norway are elevating their relationship to a “green strategic partnership,” focusing on cooperation in sustainable development and the green transition. This includes collaboration on knowledge exchange, clean energy, and environmental technologies. He said both countries are equally committed to achieving long-term sustainability goals and addressing climate-related challenges. The partnership is expected to serve as a framework for joint initiatives that support innovation, resource sharing, and climate action, reinforcing the broader vision of a forward-looking bilateral relationship.
