Cyprus President to Visit India for Talks With PM Modi on Bilateral Cooperation

Cyprus President calls India visit key for stronger ties.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has described his upcoming State Visit to India as a “very important trip,” highlighting it as a key moment in strengthening bilateral relations between Cyprus and India ahead of his arrival for a multi-city diplomatic tour from May 20 to 23.

Speaking at an event in Cyprus before his departure, Christodoulides said the visit builds on the momentum created after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Cyprus last June. He noted that that earlier engagement laid the foundation for deeper strategic cooperation between the two countries, extending beyond political ties to include areas such as investment, tourism, and economic collaboration.

During his visit, the Cypriot President is scheduled to travel to New Delhi and Mumbai, where he is expected to participate in a series of high-level meetings and business engagements. According to official statements, several agreements are likely to be signed during the visit, focusing on expanding cooperation in sectors of mutual interest.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Christodoulides will hold comprehensive discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, technology, education, culture, mobility, defence, and security. Emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, fintech, innovation, and research are also expected to feature prominently in the talks. The Indian government has stated that the discussions will also include exchanges on regional and global issues in multilateral forums.

As part of the official programme, Prime Minister Modi will host a luncheon in honour of the visiting leader. President Christodoulides will also meet President Droupadi Murmu, who is scheduled to host an official banquet, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will hold separate discussions with him during the visit. In addition, the Cypriot leader will attend a business forum in Mumbai aimed at boosting commercial ties between the two countries.

Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs have described the visit as significant, noting that it comes within a year of Prime Minister Modi’s historic trip to Cyprus—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades. They added that the engagement reflects growing strategic convergence and coincides with Cyprus holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, further elevating the importance of the visit in the broader India–EU context.
