BJP Responds To Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Traitor’ Remark Against PM Modi And Amit Shah

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against PM Modi and RSS trigger sharp criticism from BJP leaders.

A political controversy erupted on Wednesday after Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the RSS as “traitors” during an address to party workers in Rae Bareli, triggering sharp reactions from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While speaking at a Congress gathering, Rahul Gandhi urged party workers to challenge RSS supporters by accusing the BJP leadership and the organisation of “selling out India” and attacking the Constitution, as well as the legacies of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. His remarks quickly drew criticism from BJP leaders, who described the language as inflammatory and inappropriate for democratic discourse.

The Congress MP later intensified his criticism of the Prime Minister through a social media post targeting Narendra Modi over a viral interaction with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his Italy visit. Referring to the “Melodi” social media trend, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of focusing on optics and publicity while economic challenges continued to affect ordinary citizens, including farmers, labourers and small traders.

Reacting strongly to the remarks, several BJP leaders accused Rahul Gandhi of using language similar to that used by hostile foreign elements. Union Minister Giriraj Singh alleged that Gandhi’s statements reflected the tone of “enemy nations” and accused him of attempting to create unrest in the country. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also criticised the Congress leader, claiming his remarks insulted democratic institutions and echoed narratives associated with Pakistan-backed groups.

Senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur joined the criticism, accusing the Congress of historically undermining democratic institutions and invoking the Emergency period imposed under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He also defended the RSS, stating that the organisation had played an important role during several national crises and accusing the Congress of routinely targeting constitutional bodies and political opponents.

The exchange marks the latest escalation in the increasingly confrontational political rhetoric between the BJP and the Congress ahead of key political battles. While the Congress has continued to position itself as a defender of constitutional values and democratic institutions, the BJP has accused opposition leaders of using divisive language and attempting to weaken public trust in the government and state institutions.
