Belfast Arson Attacks Leave Indian Community Shaken Amid Rising Racial Tensions
Indians in UK feel unsafe after racist arson attacks in Belfast.
Members of the Indian community in Northern Ireland are reportedly living in fear after a series of racially charged incidents and anti-immigration protests escalated in Belfast and nearby areas. The unrest has included arson attacks on properties linked to Indian-origin residents, raising concerns about safety and community tensions.
According to reports, an under-construction Indian grocery store in north Belfast was set on fire amid continuing demonstrations. The violence followed protests that entered a second night after a Sudanese man was charged in connection with an attempted murder case involving a knife attack, an incident that appears to have intensified already heightened public anger and unrest.
Visuals circulating on social media, including footage shared by the BBC, showed groups of protesters throwing objects at police vehicles, with security forces responding using water cannons in Newtownabbey near Belfast city centre. Authorities also carried out rescue operations in affected areas, with firefighters evacuating residents from burning homes. Reports indicate that more than two dozen people were left homeless as a result of the disturbances.

One of the targeted sites included an abandoned property on Shankill Road, where an Indian-origin businessman had planned to open a grocery store in the coming months. The building was set ablaze during the unrest, leaving the owner deeply distressed. He described the incident as “heartbreaking,” noting that he had lived in the United Kingdom for 18 years, including the past eight years in Northern Ireland.
Community representatives have expressed concern over the rising fear among Indian residents. Dr Satyavir Singhal, chairman of the Indian Community Centre in the UK, said he wished to engage with those involved in the unrest to better understand their grievances, while also urging calm and dialogue. The incidents have prompted renewed calls for protection of minority communities and stronger measures to prevent racially motivated violence.
