Signature Forgery Case: Abhishek Banerjee Gets Two-Week Interim Protection From Court
Court grants Abhishek Banerjee interim protection for two weeks in forgery case.
Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has been granted interim protection from coercive action by the Calcutta High Court in connection with an alleged signature forgery case involving party legislators. The court’s order comes amid an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into claims of fabricated signatures linked to internal party documents.
The bench directed Banerjee to fully cooperate with the investigation and appear before the CID once he returns from Delhi. While granting him temporary relief, the court specified that no coercive steps will be taken against him for a limited period, allowing the investigation to proceed without immediate enforcement action against the TMC leader.
Banerjee had approached the High Court challenging both the FIR filed in the case and multiple summons issued by the CID. He argued that he had no involvement in the alleged forgery and sought protection until the legality and validity of the investigation process are adjudicated. The petition formed part of a broader legal challenge to the ongoing probe.

In its observations, the court noted that the investigating agency is permitted to conduct searches and seizures as per law for the purpose of collecting evidence. However, it also imposed safeguards, directing that the agency must not initiate coercive action against Banerjee for the specified interim period and must provide advance notice before any further interrogation.
The case, which involves allegations of forged signatures of legislators, has added to the political tensions within West Bengal’s ruling party. While the investigation continues, the interim protection ensures that procedural safeguards remain in place as the court examines the merits of the case and the scope of the CID’s actions.
