UP Health Scam: Six Jobs Secured Under One Name

FIR filed over fraudulent X-ray technician recruitments in 2016.

A sensational fraud in Uttar Pradesh’s health department has come to light, with an FIR lodged at Wazirganj police station in Lucknow against individuals accused of securing six X-ray technician jobs under the same name, Arpit Singh, in the 2016 recruitment drive. The scam, which involved forged documents and led to appointments across Balrampur, Farrukhabad, Rampur, Banda, Amroha, and Shamli districts, has caused significant financial losses to the state exchequer, officials revealed on Tuesday.

The complaint, filed by Dr. Ranjana Khare, director (paramedical) at the Directorate General of Medical and Health Services, alleges that the perpetrators impersonated Arpit Singh, son of Anil Kumar Singh, whose name appeared at serial number 80 on the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission’s 2016 recruitment list. According to the FIR, the accused used identical personal details—name, father’s name, and date of birth—but different Aadhaar numbers to secure jobs in multiple districts, drawing salaries for nearly nine years undetected.

The issue gained prominence after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted it during an appointment letter distribution event for X-ray technicians on Monday. Without naming individuals, Adityanath criticized past recruitment practices, alleging that “a family” exploited the system, taking money to secure jobs and “looting” the people of Uttar Pradesh. “We had to hand over several recruitments to the CBI. Now, you see a person drawing salaries from eight places,” he said, hinting at deeper systemic corruption. He vowed that the ongoing probe would ensure culprits face severe consequences, humorously referencing the “Mahabharat” to suggest far-reaching accountability.

Police have registered the case under sections of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code for cheating and forgery, with investigations underway to identify the perpetrators. Dr. Khare’s complaint included 18 pages of evidence, revealing that four of the six “Arpit Singhs” shared the same address in Agra, while one in Banda was previously booked in 2017, and another in Etah was identified as Ajit, son of Ramlal. A Lucknow police official confirmed that strict action will be taken against those found guilty, as the probe aims to uncover the full extent of the fraud.

The scam, which saw the impostors draw salaries since 2016, has sparked outrage and raised questions about oversight in the health department’s recruitment process. Authorities are now working to recover the misappropriated funds and plan to declare the fraudulent posts vacant for future recruitments, signaling a broader crackdown on such malpractices in Uttar Pradesh.
