Navy Impostor Steals Rifle in Mumbai Heist

Man posing as naval reliever flees with weapon, ammo.

An unidentified man disguised as a naval officer tricked a junior sailor and fled with a rifle and ammunition from a naval residential area in South Mumbai on Saturday night, police reported. The audacious theft, which occurred at a sentry post in the Cuffe Parade area, has prompted a massive joint search operation by the Indian Navy and Mumbai Police to apprehend the culprit and recover the stolen items.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded when the impostor, dressed in a naval uniform, approached the junior sailor on duty and claimed he was there to relieve him. Trusting the man’s appearance, the sailor handed over his rifle and ammunition, only to discover later that the supposed reliever had vanished with the weapons. The breach, which took place in a highly secure naval zone, has raised serious concerns about security protocols and potential vulnerabilities.

The Mumbai Police have registered a case against the unidentified individual under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act at Cuffe Parade Police Station. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy has launched a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with other government agencies also involved in the probe. An extensive manhunt is underway, with law enforcement combing the city to locate the suspect and the stolen rifle, which poses a significant security risk.
