India Launches Short Hajj Package 2026: Complete Pilgrimage in 20 Days Instead of 45
India introduces a first-of-its-kind short Hajj package allowing 10,000 pilgrims to complete the pilgrimage in approximately 20 days.
India has introduced its first short-duration Hajj package for 2026, allowing thousands of Muslim pilgrims to complete the annual pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in nearly 20 days instead of the traditional 40 to 45 days. The initiative has been launched by the Haj Committee of India with the aim of making the pilgrimage more accessible for working professionals, businesspersons, and others who face difficulties remaining away from work or family responsibilities for extended periods.
The first batch of pilgrims travelling under the new category departed from Kochi after Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian flagged off the inaugural short Hajj flight from Cochin International Airport on May 17. According to government officials, approximately 10,000 pilgrims are expected to undertake the pilgrimage under this special arrangement during the 2026 Hajj season. Authorities said the new package was designed following feedback received from prospective pilgrims seeking a shorter stay while still fulfilling all mandatory religious rituals.
In an official statement, the government said the short Hajj package was introduced to provide greater flexibility without affecting the religious obligations associated with the pilgrimage. Under the new arrangement, pilgrims will spend nearly 20 days in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia instead of the standard duration, which generally extends beyond one month. Officials stated that the reduced timeline has been carefully structured to ensure that core Hajj rituals, including the pilgrimage to Mina, Arafah, and Muzdalifah, are completed according to Islamic requirements.

Apart from Kochi, additional flights under the short Hajj category are scheduled to depart from several major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ahmedabad. The government expects the initiative to ease logistical challenges for many pilgrims while also improving overall travel management during the Hajj season. The move is also being viewed as part of broader efforts to modernize pilgrimage arrangements and provide more customized travel options for Indian pilgrims.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has officially announced the beginning of the Islamic month of Zil Hajj after sighting the crescent moon on May 18. Based on the lunar calendar announcement, the Day of Arafah will be observed on May 26, while Eid-ul-Adha celebrations in Saudi Arabia are scheduled to begin on May 27. Religious authorities and community organizations across India have already started preparations for the festival and the annual pilgrimage season.
In India, Eid-ul-Adha is expected to be observed on May 28, subject to moon sighting confirmations, while Kashmir is likely to celebrate the festival a day earlier, on May 27. The launch of the short Hajj package has received attention from Muslim communities across the country, especially among younger professionals and business owners seeking more manageable pilgrimage schedules. Officials believe the initiative could see further expansion in the coming years depending on the response from pilgrims and travel authorities.
