Heavy Rain Alert Issued For Northeast India, Wet Spell Continues Four Days

Heavy rain alert issued for Northeast India.

The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), Guwahati, has issued a warning of a fresh spell of widespread rainfall across Northeast India over the next four days, with parts of Arunachal Pradesh expected to witness extremely heavy rainfall. The weather department has advised authorities and residents to remain alert as intense monsoon activity is likely to affect several states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The latest forecast indicates that rainfall activity will remain active across the region before gradually weakening from July 19 onwards.

According to the forecast released by the RWFC, widespread rainfall is expected across the northeastern states on July 17 and July 18. The department has predicted fairly widespread rain activity on July 19, after which the intensity is likely to reduce. By July 21, most parts of the region are expected to receive only scattered rainfall. The weather pattern is linked to active monsoon conditions over the Northeast, which regularly experiences heavy precipitation during this period due to its geographical features and climatic conditions.

The RWFC has placed several northeastern states under an Orange Alert for July 17, warning of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The alert level has been increased for Arunachal Pradesh on July 18, with the state placed under a Red Alert due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas. A Red Alert indicates that authorities should take immediate precautions as intense rainfall could lead to disruptions, including flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure.

Within Arunachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Centre at Itanagar has identified Papum Pare and Kurung Kumey districts as the areas facing the highest risk during the current weather spell. These regions are considered vulnerable due to their hilly terrain, where heavy rainfall can trigger landslides and flash floods. Local administrations have been advised to monitor weather developments closely and take necessary preventive measures to minimise risks to residents.

The warning comes at a time when several parts of Northeast India are already dealing with the challenges of the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall in the region often affects road connectivity, disrupts daily life and creates difficulties for communities living in remote and mountainous locations. Rivers and streams can rise rapidly during intense rainfall events, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

Authorities and disaster management agencies are expected to remain prepared as the region moves through the latest phase of heavy rainfall. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay informed through official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain. The weather department has also urged people to follow safety instructions issued by local administrations, especially in areas prone to landslides and waterlogging.

The Northeast is among India's most rainfall-sensitive regions, with states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya frequently witnessing extreme weather events during the monsoon season. While the upcoming rainfall is expected to provide relief from dry conditions in some areas, officials are maintaining caution due to the possibility of weather-related hazards. The situation will continue to be monitored closely as the four-day rainfall spell progresses and conditions are reassessed in the coming days.
