Trump Says Veterans Should Replace Immigrant Truck Drivers In US

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to replace undocumented immigrant truck drivers with American military veterans, saying his administration is preparing to take what he described as "historic action" against illegal workers in the trucking industry. Speaking at the Pennsylvania Defence and Innovation Summit, Trump alleged that undocumented truck drivers pose a threat to road safety and said veterans should instead be given opportunities in the sector. The proposal is part of the administration's broader crackdown on undocumented immigration and could have significant implications for the US trucking workforce if implemented.

During his address, Trump claimed that undocumented truck drivers were responsible for numerous fatal accidents, although he did not provide evidence to support the assertion. "My administration will soon take historic action against illegal alien truck drivers who are just killing a lot of people," he said. He further alleged that many undocumented drivers could not read road signs and were driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. "They can't read signs. Many of them are on drugs or alcohol, and they shouldn't be driving these things, and they came in totally illegally, and we don't want them, but they are driving all over American roadways," Trump said.

The president said his administration intends to prioritise military veterans for trucking jobs. Under the proposal, veterans with experience operating heavy military vehicles would receive streamlined access to civilian employment in the trucking industry. Trump announced that any American who had driven a heavy truck during military service would automatically qualify for a commercial driver's licence (CDL), reducing barriers to entering the profession. He added that the government would provide additional training to veterans to prepare them for commercial trucking careers.

If implemented, the proposal could affect thousands of immigrant workers employed in the US trucking industry, including many from India. Over the past several years, immigrants from Punjab and Haryana have increasingly entered the trucking sector, attracted by the demand for drivers and relatively stable earnings. Industry groups have previously highlighted the important role immigrant workers play in addressing driver shortages, although immigration enforcement measures have periodically created uncertainty for employers and workers alike.

Trump's remarks come amid a broader push by his administration to tighten immigration enforcement across multiple industries. While the president framed the proposal as a measure to improve highway safety and expand employment opportunities for veterans, critics are likely to question the lack of evidence supporting his claims about undocumented truck drivers and raise concerns over the impact on an industry already facing labour shortages. Any policy changes would also need to comply with existing federal commercial licensing regulations and immigration laws before taking effect.
