Ruby Rose Criticises Sydney Sweeney Over Christy’s Box Office Failure, Says She “Ruined The Film”

Ruby Rose lashes out at Sydney Sweeney after Christy flops at the box office.

Hollywood actor Ruby Rose has taken aim at Sydney Sweeney following the disappointing box office performance of Christy, the recently released biopic based on boxing legend Christy Martin. The film, which premiered on November 7 across 2,000 theaters, grossed just $1.3 million in its opening weekend, marking one of the weakest wide releases of 2025. According to USA Today, the film currently ranks twelfth on the list of worst opening weekends in wide release.

In a series of posts shared on Threads on November 10, Ruby Rose criticized Sweeney’s portrayal in the film and her comments following the poor box office returns. The Orange Is the New Black actor described Sweeney as a “cretin,” alleging that the Euphoria star’s approach to the character and her team’s post-release statements diminished the spirit of the project. “You’re a cretin, and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better,” Rose wrote.

Rose revealed that she was initially in talks to star in Christy and was set to play the role of Cherry. She also praised the early version of the project, calling the original script “incredible” and “life-changing.” “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time, but this one hurt,” she wrote, hinting that the film’s direction changed significantly after her departure.

The comments stemmed from Rose’s objection to remarks made by Sweeney’s publicity team after the movie flopped. Reports suggested that Sweeney’s representatives framed Christy as a film “for the people,” a statement Rose found disingenuous. “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” Rose wrote, referencing Sweeney’s alleged political affiliations. As reported by The Guardian in August, Sweeney is a registered Republican voter in Florida, which some critics argue conflicts with the film’s themes of LGBTQ identity and representation.

Despite its high expectations, Christy failed to connect with audiences, drawing mixed critical reviews and underperforming commercially. While Sweeney had called the role a “dream come true” during the Toronto premiere in September, the film’s reception has sparked renewed industry discussion about representation, casting choices, and the importance of authentic storytelling in LGBTQ-centered biopics.
