Lost Film Featuring Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan Released After 25 Years on YouTube as Tribute
Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan's 43-minute film released on YouTube after 25 years.
A long-shelved short film featuring Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan has finally been released online nearly 25 years after it was originally shot, offering audiences a rare glimpse of the two actors at the very beginning of their careers. Titled The Last Tenant, the 43-minute film quietly premiered on YouTube under the banner The Salt Inc.
The release has been positioned as a tribute to Irrfan Khan on his sixth death anniversary, observed on April 29. The film, made in the year 2000, captures both Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan in their early acting days, long before they established themselves as leading names in Indian cinema.
Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, the project was produced by him along with his wife Neena Dasgupta. It represents an early independent effort made without major studio backing, reflecting a period when the filmmaker was still developing his craft and working with limited resources.

The film holds additional significance as it remains the only on-screen collaboration between Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan. Both actors were at the start of their respective careers at the time, and the project has gained renewed attention due to their later success and legacy in Indian cinema.
For years, The Last Tenant was believed to be lost after its original footage went missing, leaving it incomplete and unreleased. Its sudden resurfacing through a recovered VHS copy has now allowed the film to reach audiences for the first time, turning it into a notable archival release and a piece of cinematic history.
