Vivek Agnihotri: Bengal's Election Results a Reply to Political Targeting

Vivek Agnihotri reacts to Mamata Banerjee defeat and allegations

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has reacted strongly to the electoral setback of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, linking the outcome to his past disputes with the outgoing chief minister Mamata Banerjee and revisiting controversies surrounding his films.

In a social media post following the results, Agnihotri described the political shift as a “moment of change” and claimed that he had been politically and professionally targeted in West Bengal in recent years. His remarks came after the TMC suffered a major defeat, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging victorious in the state.

The filmmaker alleged that his film The Kashmir Files was effectively restricted in West Bengal after its release, claiming that it was removed from theatres in the state. He further stated that he was prevented from travelling to Bengal during that period, attributing the decision to directives linked to the state leadership.

Agnihotri also referred to controversies surrounding his yet-to-be-released project The Bengal Files, alleging that its promotional activities were blocked in the state. He claimed that the trailer launch faced disruptions and that he encountered legal challenges, including multiple FIRs filed against him.

He further alleged that he was unable to attend an event to receive an award from the Governor due to restrictions he associated with his work being “cancelled” in the state. These claims, however, have been part of ongoing disputes between the filmmaker and West Bengal authorities in recent years.

The filmmaker has frequently been at the centre of political and cultural debates due to the themes of his films, which often focus on historical and political events. His comments following the election result have added another dimension to the broader political reactions emerging after the change in power in West Bengal.

The TMC has not issued a formal response to Agnihotri’s latest remarks. Meanwhile, the election outcome continues to trigger strong reactions across political and cultural circles, reflecting the deep polarisation surrounding both governance and artistic expression in the state.
