Kiara Advani Recalls Sidharth Malhotra's Advice on Ignoring Trolls

Kiara Advani recalls Sidharth Malhotra's advice on handling trolls.

Actor Kiara Advani has spoken about the unwavering support she received from her husband, actor Sidharth Malhotra, while dealing with online trolling and criticism. The discussion has resurfaced after Advani recently faced criticism on social media over intimate scenes with co-star Yash in her upcoming film Toxic. An older interview clip has once again gained attention, highlighting Malhotra's advice on handling negativity and maintaining perspective in the face of online abuse.

Recalling a conversation from a 2023 interview with Film Companion's Anupama Chopra, Advani said the negative comments had affected her emotionally, even though she initially chose not to discuss them with her husband. She revealed that Malhotra had noticed the criticism on his own but deliberately avoided bringing it up until he felt it was necessary, instead offering reassurance and encouraging her not to let anonymous opinions affect her well-being.

According to Advani, Malhotra reminded her that online trolls often do not know the individuals they criticise personally and that their comments should not be given undue importance. He suggested that some of the criticism may have come from fans unhappy about their marriage and advised her to ignore such negativity rather than allowing it to affect her emotionally. Advani said his calm and mature outlook helped her rethink her own reaction and deal with the situation more positively.

Mental health experts say a supportive partner can play an important role in helping individuals cope with stress caused by online criticism. Psychiatrist Dr Santosh Bangar noted that empathy, patience and open communication can help reduce emotional distress during difficult periods. He explained that sharing concerns with a trusted partner can ease psychological pressure and improve resilience when facing challenging situations.

Counselling psychologist Vishnupriya Bhagirath also warned that persistent online trolling can have serious psychological effects, including reduced self-esteem, anxiety, disrupted sleep, depression and, in severe cases, self-harm. She advised individuals to protect their mental well-being by limiting exposure to abusive content, blocking accounts that engage in harassment, avoiding unnecessary engagement with trolls and building confidence through healthy coping mechanisms.

The renewed attention surrounding Advani's comments comes amid broader conversations about the impact of social media on celebrities and public figures. Experts emphasise that while criticism is often an unavoidable aspect of public life, maintaining strong personal support systems, prioritising mental health and adopting healthy digital habits can help individuals manage online negativity more effectively.
