Srijit Mukherji’s Next Film Explores Arthur Conan Doyle’s Extraordinary Life
Srijit Mukherji to explore Arthur Conan Doyle’s life in a new India-UK film.
Acclaimed National Award-winning director Srijit Mukherji is set to helm an ambitious Indo-British feature film titled Elementary My Dear Holmes, centered on the life of celebrated British author and Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The project, officially unveiled at London’s historic Guildhall on Monday, marks a creative collaboration under the UK-India Co-Production Treaty, backed by the British Film Institute (BFI) and India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The film will be produced by Shahnaab Alam and co-produced by Mukherji under his banner, Matchcut Productions.
Known for acclaimed works such as Autograph, Jaatishwar, and Gumnaami, Mukherji described the film as an introspective journey into Doyle’s world, exploring how his fictional detective blurred the boundaries between imagination and reality. The story opens with the real-life murder of Mrs Gilchrist and the wrongful conviction of Oscar Slater, a case that compelled Doyle to step beyond fiction and become an advocate for justice. Mukherji said the film seeks to portray Victorian London not just as a backdrop but as a living organism defined by reason, decay, and the moral dualities that shaped Doyle’s genius.
Srijit noted that Elementary My Dear Holmes is more than a biographical drama, calling it “a reflection on the act of creation itself.” The director aims to mirror Doyle’s own writing—precise yet emotionally charged—crafting an atmosphere where intellect constantly wrestles with ethical uncertainty. By blending historical authenticity with psychological depth, Mukherji envisions a film that uncovers the maker behind the myth and the man haunted by his own legendary invention.

Producer Shahnaab Alam called the project a celebration of the shared literary and cultural heritage between India and the United Kingdom. He remarked that Doyle’s multifaceted life—as a physician, historian, spiritualist, and crusader for justice—deserves fresh cinematic interpretation. Representatives of the Conan Doyle Estate, including CEO Tim Hubbard and family descendants Richard Pooley and Richard Doyle, endorsed the project, expressing their belief that it would reintroduce the real Arthur Conan Doyle to a new global audience.
The launch event also featured a special exhibition of rare memorabilia from the Conan Doyle archives, highlighting his extraordinary pursuits beyond literature. As anticipation builds, Elementary My Dear Holmes promises to offer a unique, cross-cultural retelling of how one man’s intellect reshaped the world’s understanding of crime, justice, and the power of fiction.
