Rajamouli’s “I Don’t Believe in God” Remark Triggers Fierce Backlash Online
Rajamouli’s atheist remark at the Varanasi event triggers online backlash and strong reactions from fans.
Acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli has sparked widespread backlash after openly declaring his atheism and expressing frustration toward Lord Hanuman during a promotional event for his upcoming film Varanasi at Ramoji Film City on November 15, 2025. The director, known for blockbusters like Baahubali and RRR that draw heavily from Hindu mythology, shared an emotional moment with the audience, revealing personal family dynamics tied to faith. He recounted his father attributing guidance to Lord Hanuman and his wife treating the deity as a close confidant before admitting, “I don’t believe in God,” and voicing anger at the divine figure for perceived failures in protection amid professional setbacks.
The controversy erupted when a teaser for Varanasi—starring Priyanka Chopra and Mahesh Babu—was leaked online due to unauthorised drone footage, overshadowing the event’s intended grandeur. Rajamouli, visibly upset, linked the incident to his family’s devotion, stating, “My dad came and said Lord Hanuman is behind me and is guiding me. Is this how he takes care—thinking of this, I’m angry.” This candid outburst, intended as personal reflection, quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from sections of social media who accused the director of hypocrisy for profiting from religious narratives while rejecting belief.
Online reactions on X were swift and polarised. Critics labelled Rajamouli’s remarks as disrespectful, with one user writing, “He may be an atheist, but making such comments regarding God is completely unacceptable,” especially given his reliance on mythological themes for commercial success. Another pointed out the perceived double standard: “He doesn’t believe in God... but wants to make movies related to God just to make money.” Some defended atheism as compatible with Hinduism but condemned blaming Hanuman for team failures, arguing Rajamouli should have directed frustration at event organisers or technical staff instead of mocking his family’s faith.

Despite the uproar, supporters noted that Hinduism traditionally accommodates diverse beliefs, including atheism, and urged context—Rajamouli’s comments stemmed from a moment of professional disappointment rather than malice. The incident has reignited debates on artistic freedom, personal faith, and the expectations placed on public figures who engage with cultural and religious iconography. As Varanasi gears up for release, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between creative expression and public sentiment in India’s deeply spiritual cinematic landscape.
