Amitabh Bachchan Remembers Kamini Kaushal With a Heartfelt Note on Her Passing
Amitabh Bachchan pays tribute to Kamini Kaushal, honoring her legacy after her passing at 98.
Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan has paid heartfelt tribute to veteran actress Kamini Kaushal, who passed away at the age of 98 on Thursday night at her Mumbai residence, marking the end of a remarkable 76-year cinematic journey. In an emotional post on X on Saturday, Bachchan described her as a “legendary artist” and “icon” who contributed immensely to Hindi cinema, while also recalling deep familial ties predating India’s partition. Kaushal, who debuted with the critically acclaimed Neecha Nagar in 1946, remained active in films until her final appearance in Aamir Khan’s 2022 blockbuster Laal Singh Chaddha at 95, embodying resilience and grace across generations.
Kaushal rose to stardom in the late 1940s and early 1950s as one of the industry’s highest-paid actresses, starring opposite the golden trio of Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor in classics such as Do Bhai, Ziddi, Shabnam, and Arzoo. Her lead role in Bimal Roy’s 1954 National Award-winning film Biraj Bahu earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress, while her portrayal in the adaptation of Premchand’s Godaan further cemented her dramatic prowess. By the 1960s, she seamlessly transitioned to character roles, most notably as a maternal figure in Manoj Kumar’s patriotic hits like Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, redefining longevity in Indian cinema.
Bachchan’s tribute carried a personal note, revealing that Kaushal’s family and his mother Teji Bachchan’s were close friends from pre-partition Punjab. He recounted how Kaushal’s elder sister, a classmate of his mother, tragically died in an accident, leading Kaushal—following tradition—to marry her brother-in-law. “A most pleasant, warm, affectionate, and talented artist has left us,” Bachchan wrote, lamenting the gradual departure of an entire era. The bond between the families, rooted in shared history and mutual respect, added emotional depth to his remembrance of the actress beyond her professional legacy.

Kaushal’s demise has evoked widespread mourning in the film fraternity, with tributes pouring in for a performer who bridged the black-and-white era with modern cinema. Her career spanned from post-independence optimism to contemporary storytelling, leaving an indelible mark through versatility and dignity. As Bachchan noted, her passing is not just a loss to the industry but to a “friends fraternity” forged in a bygone time—one that, one by one, is fading into memory.
