Bollywood Icon Kamini Kaushal Passes Away at 98, Film Industry Pays Tribute

Veteran actress Kamini Kaushal cremated in Mumbai surrounded by family.

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actress Kamini Kaushal, who passed away late Thursday night at her Mumbai residence. She was 98 and would have turned 99 in February. Her close family friend, Sajan Narain, confirmed the news, saying that Kamini Kaushal died peacefully at home. The cremation took place on Friday morning at the Worli Crematorium, where her family, close associates, and even her beloved pet dogs were present to bid her farewell.

A prominent figure in Hindi cinema’s golden era, Kamini Kaushal’s illustrious career began with Chetan Anand’s critically acclaimed film Neecha Nagar (1946), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Her natural acting and quiet strength made her a rare presence in Indian cinema at the time. She went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Biraj Bahu (1954), solidifying her reputation as one of Bollywood’s most respected performers.

Over the years, Kaushal starred in numerous landmark films including Paras (1949), Arzoo (1950), Jailor (1958), and Godaan (1963). Known for her grace and depth, she became a frequent collaborator with actor-director Manoj Kumar in patriotic films such as Shaheed, Upkar, and Purab Aur Paschim, where her portrayals added emotional gravitas. Her versatility allowed her to transition seamlessly into character roles, remaining relevant across generations.

Even in the later decades of her career, Kamini Kaushal continued to enthrall audiences with her performances in mainstream films like Chennai Express (2013) and Kabir Singh (2019). Her performance in Kabir Singh earned her a Screen Award and a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2015, she was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Her final screen appearance was in Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) alongside Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Following her passing, tributes poured in from across the film fraternity. Shahid Kapoor shared a heartfelt message saying, “Rest in light, ma’am,” while Kareena Kapoor Khan posted a nostalgic photo with a heart emoji. Actress Kiara Advani remembered her co-star, writing, “It was an honour to work with you. Your grace, humility and talent inspired generations.” Actor Gulshan Devaiah also paid his respect on social media. Kamini Kaushal is survived by her sons Shravan, Vidur, and Rahul Sood.
