Mahesh Bhatt Celebrates Main Vaapas Aaunga Success After Strong Turnaround At Box Office

Mahesh Bhatt applauds film's remarkable box office resurgence.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has praised Imtiaz Ali's latest film Main Vaapas Aaunga after its remarkable turnaround at the box office, saying the film's growing success demonstrates that audiences ultimately recognise meaningful cinema. Although the film had a slow start following its theatrical release on June 12, strong word of mouth has helped it gain momentum in the weeks since, drawing appreciation from both audiences and members of the film industry.

In a note published in Variety India, Mahesh Bhatt congratulated Imtiaz Ali for the film's resurgence and described Main Vaapas Aaunga as a work that deserved to be celebrated. Reflecting on its journey, Bhatt contrasted films that arrive with massive promotional campaigns against those that quietly find their audience over time. He suggested that Imtiaz's latest directorial belongs to the latter category, earning recognition through its emotional depth rather than initial commercial hype.

Bhatt also remarked that many people had dismissed the film prematurely, only for it to gradually prove its worth. "Many had declared it dead on arrival," he wrote, adding that its revival reinforced his belief that audiences possess a "mysterious intelligence" that cannot be underestimated. According to him, genuine storytelling eventually finds its place, regardless of early box office numbers or industry expectations.

Explaining what resonated with him most, Bhatt said the film's emotional core extended beyond its narrative. He described Main Vaapas Aaunga as an exploration of the universal longing to return home, be understood and search for deeper meaning beyond the identities people construct throughout their lives. He praised Imtiaz Ali for portraying these themes with sensitivity and sincerity, suggesting that the film's emotional authenticity has been the driving force behind its growing popularity.

Main Vaapas Aaunga initially struggled to attract audiences when it hit theatres on June 12, leading many to question its commercial prospects. However, positive reviews and favourable audience reactions have steadily improved its box office performance, making it one of the recent examples of a film benefiting from sustained word-of-mouth support. Mahesh Bhatt's endorsement adds to the appreciation the film has received in recent weeks, highlighting how audience reception can sometimes defy early industry predictions and reaffirm the enduring appeal of heartfelt storytelling.
