Imtiaz Ali Says He Is "Thoda Hairaan" By 'Main Vaapas Aaunga's' Box Office Results
Filmmaker shares candid reaction to movie's box office performance.
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has expressed both gratitude and surprise at the strong box office performance of his latest film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, which has witnessed a significant rise in collections since its release on June 12. Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari, the partition-era drama has benefited from positive audience response and strong word of mouth, helping it gain momentum during its theatrical run.
Speaking about the film's performance, Ali said the collections recorded a remarkable increase within a week of release. According to the director, the earnings on the latest Friday were nearly double those of the opening day, a trend he attributed entirely to audience support. He described the response as overwhelming and admitted that he was pleasantly surprised by the film's growing popularity among moviegoers.
"Pehle jis din Friday ko film release hui thi, aur aaj ek hafte baad phir Friday hai, toh collection pehle Friday se shayad double hai. To yeh sab janta ki wajah se hi hua hai, word of mouth ki wajah se hi hua hai. Overwhelming feeling hai, bahut khushi ki baat hai, thoda hairaan bhi hoon," Ali said, thanking viewers for embracing the film and helping it find success through positive recommendations.

The filmmaker also revealed that he received encouragement from several prominent members of the film industry after the movie's release. He recalled conversations with veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and director Subhash Ghai, both of whom praised the film and urged him to remain confident. According to Ali, Kapur remarked that viewers had largely focused on the film's strengths and had not pointed out any major shortcomings.
Ali further shared that actors including Ayushmann Khurrana, Dia Mirza and Rani Mukerji reached out to appreciate the film. He said he was particularly touched when Ayushmann sang one of the film's songs and shared it on social media despite not being associated with the project. The gesture, he noted, reflected genuine affection and support from fellow artists in the industry.
Adding to the celebrations surrounding the film's success, Ali made surprise visits to several cinemas in Delhi on Friday. The unannounced appearances delighted audiences, who had the opportunity to interact with the filmmaker and share their reactions directly. As Main Vaapas Aaunga continues to attract viewers, its growing box office collections and positive audience feedback suggest that the film has found resonance through word of mouth, emerging as one of the notable success stories of the season.
