Actor Demands Production Houses Stop Using Influencers for Actual Film Roles
Actor Raashul Tandon criticizes casting influencers in films over trained professional actors.
Actor Raashul Tandon has strongly criticized the growing trend of casting social media influencers and content creators in mainstream films and web series instead of trained actors. The actor, known for his roles in Pink and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, said production houses are prioritizing online popularity over acting ability.
The debate resurfaced after journalist Saurabh Dwivedi faced backlash for his acting debut in Kartavya. In a video shared on Instagram, Raashul questioned whether influencers actually go through the same audition struggle as professional actors.
He referenced comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi appearing in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and YouTuber Ajey Nagar featuring in Runway 34. Raashul argued that major studios and streaming platforms cast such personalities mainly to capitalize on their fan following and social media reach.

According to him, there is a major difference between being famous online and being capable of delivering emotional performances on screen. He urged filmmakers to offer deserving actors roles suited to their talent instead of focusing only on “face value” and digital popularity.
Raashul also appealed to viewers to change their content consumption habits. He said audiences should stop supporting “cringe reels” if they want better storytelling and fresher cinema. Comparing Indian entertainment with Western classics like Breaking Bad and Seinfeld, he argued that audiences must encourage originality for the industry to evolve.
The actor further wrote that the issue goes beyond a single film or performer and reflects what society celebrates as viewers. He said the industry would create more space for talented actors only when audiences begin valuing performance over popularity.
Interestingly, several creators-turned-actors have also acknowledged the criticism. Influencer Kusha Kapila previously admitted that trained actors are justified in feeling upset if roles are handed out solely based on follower count. Creator Dolly Singh had also said that influencers are often offered tiny roles mainly for promotional value rather than meaningful acting opportunities.
Meanwhile, Kartavya continues to face criticism online over Saurabh Dwivedi’s performance. The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Rasika Dugal, and Sanjay Mishra and is currently streaming on Netflix.
