Aamir Khan Begins Massive Weight Loss For Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Lalkaara'

Aamir Khan begins weight loss for Gowariker's cricket drama Lalkaara.

Aamir Khan has reportedly begun a major weight-loss programme for Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama Lalkaara. The actor is expected to play a 25-year-old character in the film and is working on his physical appearance to suit the role. The project is reportedly based on the historic 1952 Test series between India and Pakistan and marks another sports-themed collaboration between Khan and Gowariker after their acclaimed film Lagaan.

According to reports citing a source close to the project, Khan is following a strict fitness and weight-loss routine as part of his preparation. The actor has previously undergone significant physical transformations for several roles, and his preparation for Lalkaara is expected to be similarly demanding. The focus this time is on helping the 61-year-old actor convincingly portray a much younger character on screen.

Lalkaara is expected to explore the cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan through the events surrounding the 1952 Test series. If the project proceeds as reported, it will bring Khan and Gowariker together for another film centred on cricket. Their earlier collaboration, Lagaan, was set during British rule in India and used cricket as the backdrop for a story involving colonialism, taxation and resistance.

The casting around Lalkaara has also generated attention in recent months. Farhan Akhtar was earlier rumoured to have been associated with the film as an actor, with reports suggesting that scheduling issues resulted in his replacement by Sidhant Gupta. Farhan later denied that he had exited the project, explaining that he had never officially entered it. He said actors regularly receive offers and choose some projects while deciding against others.

Although Farhan Akhtar is reportedly not directing Lalkaara, he remains connected to the project as a producer. Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani are backing the film under Excel Entertainment. The production team has not revealed all details about the project, including its complete cast and filming schedule, leaving several aspects of the sports drama under wraps.

For Aamir Khan and Gowariker, Lalkaara would mark a reunion more than two decades after Lagaan. That film went on to become one of their most recognised collaborations and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. With Khan now undertaking a physical transformation for the reported 25-year-old role, expectations are building around how the actor and director will approach their next cricket-based story.
