MG's Boldest Electric SUV Yet Arrives to Challenge India's EV Market

JSW MG Motor India is set to introduce its new three-row electric SUV in the country on August 26, expanding its growing electric vehicle portfolio. The model, widely expected to be called the Hector Tomohawk, will be positioned above the existing Hector and is expected to offer seating for seven passengers. MG has not yet officially confirmed the production name, although it has reportedly trademarked the Hector Tomohawk name in India. The new SUV is expected to combine a spacious cabin, premium equipment and a long driving range.

The upcoming electric SUV will be the first MG model in India to use the company's ADAPT architecture, a platform designed to support multiple powertrain configurations. This gives the manufacturer flexibility to introduce different versions of the SUV in the future. The production-spec model has already been spotted without camouflage, revealing a large and upright body designed to maximise cabin and passenger space. Its exterior features slim horizontal LED daytime running lights, a centrally positioned MG badge and lower-mounted headlamps, while the lower section gets a large air intake.

The SUV's side profile is dominated by large alloy wheels, roof rails and black cladding around the wheel arches and lower sections of the doors. Its long wheelbase and extended rear overhang are expected to create enough space for three rows of seats. A large glasshouse should provide better visibility for passengers, while the substantial D-pillar contributes to its large SUV appearance. At the rear, slim horizontal tail-lamps extend towards the sides, giving the vehicle a wider visual stance. The overall design is aimed at buyers looking for a spacious family SUV with an electric powertrain.

Inside, the Hector Tomohawk is expected to feature a beige-themed cabin with a minimalist dashboard layout. Separate digital displays for the driver and infotainment system are expected to form the centrepiece of the dashboard. Other anticipated equipment includes a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, powered and ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging and a powered tailgate. The SUV could also offer dual-zone automatic climate control with air vents for all three rows, a 360-degree camera and an advanced driver assistance system. Six airbags and an electronic parking brake are also expected.

MG has not yet disclosed the final battery and motor specifications for the India-spec version. However, the SUV is expected to share its underlying architecture with the Wuling Starlight 560, which uses a 69.2kWh LFP battery and a front-mounted electric motor producing around 204bhp and 310Nm. The international model has a claimed CLTC range of up to 530km. If the Indian version adopts similar hardware, the new MG SUV could potentially offer a claimed range of more than 500km. The company is expected to reveal the final battery capacity, performance figures, charging specifications and certified range at the debut.

The new electric SUV is expected to be priced between ₹20 lakh and ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom), although the final price will be announced closer to its launch. It will strengthen MG's presence in India's expanding three-row electric SUV market and could compete with models such as the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9S and Kia Carens Clavis EV. MG is also expected to explore a plug-in hybrid version at a later stage, taking advantage of the flexibility offered by its ADAPT architecture.
