BMW X1 LWB Review: Rear Seat Space, Comfort, Features And Driving Experience

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase has been launched in India at an introductory price of Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom), bringing a significantly more spacious version of BMW's popular luxury SUV to Indian buyers. While the X1 LWB retains the familiar BMW design and premium positioning, its biggest change is the additional space created for rear passengers. With a 4,616 mm overall length and a 2,800 mm wheelbase, the SUV is 116 mm longer than the standard X1, while the wheelbase has grown by 108 mm. BMW claims rear knee room has increased by 109 mm, making the second row particularly appealing for families and chauffeur-driven owners.

The cabin has also been designed around comfort and everyday usability rather than outright sportiness. The X1 LWB gets BMW's curved widescreen display with the latest Operating System 9, a floating centre console, wireless charging, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, ConnectedDrive services and a Harman Kardon sound system. A panoramic glass roof, larger rear windows and wide-opening doors further improve the cabin experience. Boot space stands at 540 litres and can be expanded to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded, giving the SUV enough versatility for family trips, airport runs and longer journeys.

Under the bonnet, the X1 LWB gets a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine producing 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engine is E20 fuel compliant, while the longer-wheelbase SUV has been tuned with a stronger focus on ride comfort. The suspension setup helps the vehicle feel composed on Indian roads, although buyers looking for the sharp, driver-focused character traditionally associated with BMW may find the X1 LWB relatively relaxed. The emphasis here is clearly on refinement, stability and passenger comfort rather than outright performance.

Technology and safety form another major part of the package. The SUV comes with Digital Key Plus, Remote Software Updates, Parking Assistant Plus, Reversing Assistant, a 360-degree camera and connected vehicle services. Safety features include eight airbags, Adaptive LED headlamps, Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Cruise Control and an ADAS package. The Digital Key Plus system also allows compatible smartphones or smartwatches to function as the vehicle key and enables digital access to be shared with other users.

The X1 LWB's biggest strengths are its spacious rear cabin, comfortable ride, premium interior and practical boot. However, the 156 hp petrol engine may leave some buyers wanting more performance at this price, while the absence of a diesel option could be a consideration for customers covering high annual highway mileage. It also moves somewhat away from the sporty driving character traditionally associated with BMW. Against rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40, the X1 LWB's strongest argument is therefore its combination of rear-seat space, technology and everyday usability.

For Indian buyers, the BMW X1 Long Wheelbase represents a thoughtful change in priorities. Rather than simply stretching the existing X1, BMW has created a luxury SUV aimed at buyers who place family comfort and practicality alongside premium features and brand appeal. At Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it offers a compelling package for customers upgrading from mainstream SUVs or looking for a compact luxury vehicle with generous rear-seat space. The X1 LWB may not be the most performance-oriented BMW, but its India-specific focus could make it one of the brand's most relevant models for everyday luxury.
