Report Says Apple's OLED iPad Mini Will Launch in October

Apple's OLED iPad Mini reportedly launching this October, per report.

Apple is reportedly preparing a significant refresh of its iPad lineup, with the next-generation iPad mini expected to debut in October featuring an OLED display. According to a report citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the compact tablet will become the first non-Pro iPad to adopt OLED screen technology, marking one of the most substantial upgrades to the iPad mini series in recent years. Alongside the iPad mini, Apple is also said to be developing refreshed versions of the entry-level iPad and iPad Air with updated hardware.

The upcoming iPad mini, internally codenamed J510, is expected to retain its compact design while focusing primarily on display improvements. If the report proves accurate, the device will be the first standard iPad to feature an OLED panel, bringing deeper blacks, higher contrast and improved colour reproduction compared to the LCD displays used in previous generations. Apple previously introduced OLED technology to the iPad Pro lineup in 2024 after using the display technology extensively across its iPhone range.

According to the report, Apple could unveil the new iPad mini during the autumn launch season, with commercial availability expected by October. While the OLED display is anticipated to be the headline feature, the report suggests that Apple will largely preserve the tablet's existing form factor rather than introducing a major redesign. The refreshed model would represent the first significant update to the iPad mini lineup since its previous major revision.

Apple is also reportedly working on a refreshed entry-level iPad, internally codenamed J581, which is expected to launch during the first quarter of 2027. Unlike the iPad mini, the standard iPad is said to receive only an updated processor while retaining its current design and LCD display. The strategy is expected to help Apple maintain the affordability of its entry-level tablet while improving overall performance.

In addition, refreshed 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models, codenamed J807 and J837, are reportedly under development. Although specific hardware upgrades remain undisclosed, the new iPad Air models are expected to launch alongside updated iPad Pro devices during the spring of next year. The report also states that Apple intends to eventually introduce OLED displays to the iPad Air lineup, while the standard iPad is likely to continue using LCD technology to keep production costs lower.

Beyond its tablet portfolio, Apple is also reportedly developing new Apple Pencil accessories to complement its upcoming devices. While the company has not officially confirmed any of these products or launch timelines, the reported roadmap indicates a broader effort to modernise the iPad family through improved display technology, updated processors and enhanced accessory support. If the reported schedule remains unchanged, the OLED-equipped iPad mini is expected to be the first of these new devices to reach the market later this year.
