iPad Mini 2026 Tipped to Feature OLED Display, Same 60Hz Rate

iPad Mini's OLED upgrade may not include faster refresh rate.

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new generation of the iPad Mini later this year, with industry leaks suggesting the compact tablet will feature an OLED display for the first time. However, despite the long-awaited upgrade from LCD technology, the device is expected to retain a 60Hz refresh rate, rather than adopting the smoother 120Hz ProMotion display available on Apple's premium Pro models. Apple has not officially confirmed the device or its specifications.

According to a report citing tipster Lanzuk (@yeux1122), Samsung has begun mass production of OLED panels for the upcoming iPad Mini on its "A2 G5.5" production line. The report claims the tablet will feature an 8.4-inch hybrid OLED display using Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) technology. The screen is expected to be slightly larger than the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD panel found on the current iPad Mini released in October 2024.

Despite the transition to OLED technology, the display is reportedly limited to a fixed 60Hz refresh rate, matching the refresh rate of its predecessor. This suggests Apple will continue reserving its ProMotion technology, which supports adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz, for higher-end devices such as the iPad Pro. Apple's ProMotion displays use Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) OLED panels, enabling smoother scrolling, animations and more efficient power management.

The reported specification aligns with Apple's broader product strategy of differentiating standard and Pro models through display technology. While Apple recently expanded ProMotion support to additional devices, including the iPhone 17, the company appears likely to maintain a distinction between its flagship tablets and the more affordable iPad Mini. As a result, users can expect improved contrast, deeper blacks and better colour reproduction from OLED technology, but without the smoother visual experience offered by higher refresh rates.

Previous reports have also suggested that the next-generation iPad Mini will be powered by Apple's A18 chipset, the same processor expected to power the standard iPhone 16. The tablet is also rumoured to support Apple Intelligence, bringing the company's latest artificial intelligence features to its compact tablet lineup. These upgrades would represent a notable improvement in performance and on-device AI capabilities compared with the current A17 Pro-powered model.

Apple is expected to unveil the refreshed iPad Mini during the third quarter of 2026, although the company has not announced an official launch timeline. Until Apple confirms the product, all reported specifications remain based on industry leaks and supply chain information. If accurate, the next-generation iPad Mini will introduce OLED technology to the lineup while continuing to position itself below the company's Pro tablets in terms of display performance.
