Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to introduce one of the most significant camera upgrades in the history of the iPhone lineup, with reports suggesting the devices will feature a variable-aperture main camera system. The technology, which is commonly found in professional cameras, would allow users to adjust the lens opening to control light intake, depth of field, and overall image quality more effectively. The devices are anticipated to launch in September 2026 as part of Apple's next-generation flagship smartphone series.
According to reports citing noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the variable-aperture camera is expected to be a major advancement for mobile photography. Unlike traditional fixed-aperture smartphone cameras, the new system would enable the camera to adapt to different lighting conditions and photographic requirements. This could result in improved portrait shots, enhanced low-light performance, and greater creative control for users seeking professional-grade photography experiences on a smartphone.
The reported upgrade is also expected to be accompanied by a new custom-built 48-megapixel main camera sensor being developed in collaboration with Samsung. In addition, Apple is said to be working on improvements to the telephoto camera, including a larger aperture that could enhance image quality during zoom photography, particularly in low-light environments.
