Sunil Gavaskar Responds to Sanju Samson’s Selfless Hundred Remark in IPL 2026
Sanju Samson says he avoided a hundred; Sunil Gavaskar responds in IPL 2026 debate.
Chennai Super Kings batter Sanju Samson delivered a match-winning unbeaten 87 against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, once again reinforcing his reputation as one of the most impactful white-ball batters in the league. His composed knock guided CSK to a comfortable chase of 155 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, securing their fifth win of the season and highlighting his ability to balance aggression with control under pressure.
CSK’s chase began on a cautious note after early wickets left them struggling at 45/2 on a pitch that initially offered assistance to bowlers. However, Samson anchored the innings with remarkable composure, taking time to settle before gradually shifting gears. At one stage moving to 22 off 22 balls, he rebuilt steadily and reached his half-century in the 12th over, before accelerating against the Delhi Capitals’ spin attack.
His innings was defined by intelligent shot selection and situational awareness rather than brute force. As the pitch eased slightly for set batters, Samson capitalised with calculated aggression, ensuring CSK never lost control of the chase. His partnership with Kartik Sharma proved decisive, as the duo added an unbeaten 114 runs off just 66 balls, effectively sealing the match well before the final overs.

Speaking after the match in a conversation with broadcaster Harsha Bhogle, Samson reflected on his approach and the decision-making behind not pushing for a personal milestone. “A hundred is always special. But for that, I would have had to be a bit selfish. I didn’t say, ‘Take a single, let me get my hundred.’ I thought it was better to win the match for the team,” he said, underlining his team-first mindset.
His remarks sparked further discussion among cricket pundits, with former India Captain Sunil Gavaskar responding positively to Samson’s approach. Gavaskar reportedly praised the batter’s maturity, noting that match awareness and finishing games take precedence over personal landmarks in high-pressure T20 cricket, especially in successful chases.
The innings once again highlighted Samson’s growing consistency in pressure situations for CSK this season. While the Delhi Capitals bowling attack struggled to contain him once he settled, his ability to pace the innings and accelerate at the right time proved decisive in turning a tricky chase into a controlled victory for Chennai Super Kings.
