Ravi Shastri Calls For Careful Management Of Jasprit Bumrah In IPL 2026
Ravi Shastri urges Mumbai Indians to manage Bumrah carefully
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has urged the Mumbai Indians to carefully manage the workload of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, amid growing concerns over his dip in form during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026. Bumrah has endured a rare lean patch this season, managing just three wickets in 10 matches. Despite maintaining his reputation for economical spells, the strike bowler has gone through extended wicketless phases, including a stretch of five consecutive games without success. His only breakthrough came against the Gujarat Titans, but he has since been unable to build momentum.
Shastri, speaking on a broadcast segment, expressed concern that Bumrah’s struggles may not be purely technical or physical but also linked to mental fatigue. He pointed to the bowler’s heavy international workload over the past year and warned that sustained pressure without adequate rest could affect long-term performance. He emphasised that Mumbai Indians must prioritise Bumrah’s fitness management, given the broader importance of his role in Indian cricket. According to Shastri, the upcoming international calendar will demand peak performance from the pacer, including major Test series and the ICC tournament cycle.
The remarks come in the context of India’s packed schedule over the next two years, which includes overseas tours and preparation for the 50-over World Cup, a tournament India last won in 2011. Shastri suggested that preserving Bumrah’s physical and mental freshness should be treated as a strategic priority for both franchise and national team interests.
Interestingly, Bumrah had been in excellent form earlier in the year during India’s victorious campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, where he finished as one of the leading wicket-takers. However, his form has since dipped, raising questions about consistency across formats and workload transitions.

The broader debate around Bumrah also highlights ongoing concerns over workload management in modern cricket. While India have previously rotated him across formats to prevent injuries, experts warn that fatigue—particularly mental fatigue—can still impact performance even when physical conditioning is maintained.
With India set to enter a crucial international phase later this year, including a busy white-ball schedule and major global tournaments, the management of Bumrah’s fitness is likely to remain a key talking point for selectors and team strategists.
