Spain Beat Austria 3-0 in FIFA World Cup Round of 32

Spain thrash Austria 3-0 to reach World Cup Round of 16.

Spain produced a commanding display to defeat Austria 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, ending a 16-year wait for a knockout-stage victory and securing a place in the Round of 16. Mikel Oyarzabal starred with two goals, while Pedro Porro added his first senior international goal as Spain outclassed their opponents from start to finish. The victory marked Spain's first World Cup knockout win since lifting the trophy in 2010.

Spain dominated possession from the opening whistle and created several opportunities before taking the lead in the 36th minute. Marc Cucurella delivered a precise cutback into the penalty area, where Mikel Oyarzabal finished confidently to put his side ahead. Spain thought they had doubled the advantage earlier in the first half through Cucurella, but the goal was ruled out after a foul on the Austrian goalkeeper during the build-up.

The Spanish side maintained complete control after the interval and extended their lead in the 66th minute. Pedro Porro found the back of the net with a composed finish to score his first goal for the senior national team, giving Spain a comfortable cushion. Austria struggled to respond as Spain continued to dictate the tempo and limit their opponents' attacking opportunities.

Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute after another well-worked move involving Cucurella, sealing an emphatic 3-0 victory. The late goal capped an outstanding team performance that showcased Spain's attacking quality, defensive organisation and control throughout the contest. Austria were unable to mount a comeback and exited the tournament after being comprehensively outplayed.

The result ended Spain's disappointing run in recent FIFA World Cup knockout matches. After winning the World Cup in 2010, Spain failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2014 and were eliminated in the first knockout round in both the 2018 and 2022 editions. Thursday's victory therefore represented an important milestone as the former champions returned to winning ways in the tournament's knockout phase.

Spain will now face either Portugal or Croatia in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for a second FIFA World Cup title. With Oyarzabal in excellent form and the team producing one of its most convincing performances of the tournament, Spain will head into the next round with renewed confidence and strong momentum.
