Saina Nehwal Stresses Protein Intake, Balanced Diet For Peak Badminton Performance
Saina Nehwal highlights protein and diet importance for athletes.
Former Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal has stressed the importance of proper nutrition, particularly protein intake, for badminton players, stating that a balanced diet and smart training are essential for achieving peak performance on the court. Speaking on a podcast, she highlighted that athletes must focus not just on training intensity but also on what they consume daily.
Saina explained that protein is a “non-negotiable” part of an athlete’s diet, especially in a physically demanding sport like badminton that requires speed, agility, and endurance. She remarked that players may need to include some non-vegetarian food in their diet to meet protein requirements, though moderation and balance remain key. According to her, the goal is not excessive consumption but ensuring the body gets the right nutrients.
She also cautioned against overtraining, noting that pushing the body beyond its limits can be counterproductive. Instead, she advocated for structured and effective training routines that align with the body’s needs. Saina emphasised that athletes should focus on quality over quantity when it comes to practice sessions, ensuring that their training contributes positively to performance and recovery.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining optimal body composition, she said badminton players must keep their body weight in check and minimise body fat to remain quick and light on the court. Agility and speed, she noted, are directly linked to how well an athlete manages their fitness and diet, making nutritional discipline a critical aspect of professional sports.
Saina’s comments come at a time when sports science and nutrition are gaining increasing attention in India, with athletes across disciplines adopting tailored diet plans to enhance performance. Her insights reflect a broader shift towards integrating fitness, recovery, and nutrition into training regimes rather than relying solely on physical practice.
As one of India’s most accomplished badminton players, Saina’s advice carries weight among aspiring athletes and professionals alike. Her emphasis on balanced eating, adequate protein intake, and mindful training highlights the evolving understanding of what it takes to succeed in modern competitive sports.
