Sachin Tendulkar’s Perth 1992 Hundred Was His Finest Test Knock, Says Pravin Amre

Former India cricketer Pravin Amre has ranked Sachin Tendulkar’s maiden Test century in Australia as one of the finest innings he has ever witnessed, highlighting the extreme difficulty of the conditions during the 1992 Perth Test against Australia. Speaking on Doordarshan’s ‘The Great Indian Cricket Show,’ Amre, who was the 12th man and Tendulkar’s roommate during the series, recalled the iconic WACA pitch that was notoriously fast, bouncy, and riddled with massive cracks. In a striking anecdote, Amre noted that Tendulkar placed his bat upright in one of the large cracks on the surface, demonstrating just how treacherous the wicket was.

At just 18 years old, Tendulkar walked into a formidable Australian bowling attack comprising Craig McDermott, Merv Hughes, and Paul Reiffel—considered one of the most hostile and skilled pace units of the era. Despite the intimidating conditions and the ball frequently misbehaving off the cracks, Tendulkar played with extraordinary composure, skill, and maturity beyond his years. Amre described the knock as a masterclass in technique, temperament, and courage, saying it stood out among all of Tendulkar’s hundreds due to the sheer quality of the opposition and the unforgiving nature of the pitch.

The 1992 Australia tour marked Tendulkar’s first Test series in the country, and he emerged as India’s top scorer with 368 runs across five matches at an average of 46.00, including two centuries and a highest score of 148*. Although Australia dominated the series 4-0, Tendulkar’s performances laid the foundation for his legendary record in Australia. Over his career, he amassed 1,809 runs in 20 Tests against the Aussies at an average of 53.20, with six centuries and seven fifties, including a career-best 241*.
