Sjoerd Marijne Returns as Indian Women's Hockey Chief Coach for World Cup Qualifiers
Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne reappointed as chief coach of Indian women's hockey team ahead of World Cup Qualifiers.
The Indian women’s hockey team has welcomed back Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne as their chief coach, marking his return after previously guiding the team to a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Marijne, 51, will bring his experience from 2017–2021 to lead India once again on the global stage.
Supporting Marijne will be Matias Vila as the analytical coach. Vila, a former Argentina midfielder, represented his country at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics and has over two decades of coaching experience. The support staff also includes Wayne Lombard as scientific advisor and head of athletic performance, alongside Rodet Yila and Ciara Yila.
Marijne expressed enthusiasm about his return, saying, “After 4.5 years, I return with fresh energy and a clear vision to support the team’s growth and help the players achieve their full potential on the world stage.” Under his previous tenure, India broke into the top 10 of the world rankings.

Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey welcomed the coach and his team, thanking the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for expediting the appointment. He highlighted that maintaining fitness will be a key focus, given its role in India’s historic Olympic performance.
The reappointment signals a strong intent to consolidate India’s position in women’s hockey ahead of major international tournaments. With an experienced coaching and support team in place, the Indian women’s squad will aim to build on past successes and strengthen their global competitiveness in the upcoming World Cup and beyond.
