Real Madrid Defeats Espanyol 2-0; Vinicius Scores Twice as Barcelona Waits for Title Confirmation
Vinicius Junior scores twice as Real Madrid defeats Espanyol, delaying Barcelona's title celebration one week.
Vinicius Junior scored twice to secure a 2-0 victory for Real Madrid against Espanyol on Sunday, delaying Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations and keeping the championship race mathematically alive for at least another week.
The result means Barcelona, who lead the table, must wait longer to clinch their 29th league title after Real Madrid reduced the gap to 11 points with four matches remaining. The Catalan side had been on the verge of securing the title if Madrid dropped points, but the victory ensures that the title race extends into next weekend’s high-stakes Clasico clash between the two rivals.
Real Madrid, managed by Alvaro Arbeloa, entered the match under pressure following inconsistent recent form and the absence of injured star Kylian Mbappe. Despite dominating possession in the first half, they struggled to create clear chances, with Vinicius coming closest after a deflected effort struck the post.

The breakthrough came early in the second half when Vinicius combined effectively with substitute Gonzalo Garcia, beating multiple defenders before finishing clinically. He added a second goal around ten minutes later, converting a clever backheel assist from Jude Bellingham with a precise strike into the top corner, effectively sealing the result.
Espanyol, coached by Manolo Gonzalez, showed resilience but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin making key saves. The home side, currently battling to avoid relegation, extended their winless run, leaving them still hovering above the drop zone with pressure mounting in the closing weeks of the season.
With Barcelona now set to host Real Madrid in the upcoming Clasico, the title race remains formally open, though heavily tilted in the leaders’ favour. A victory for Barcelona in that encounter would secure the championship, while Madrid must win to keep their slim hopes alive, ensuring a high-intensity showdown between Spain’s two biggest clubs.
