PV Sindhu Knocked Out of Indonesia Open by World No. 1 An Se Young

PV Sindhu loses to An Se Young in Indonesia Open.

Indian badminton star and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu exited the Indonesia Open on Thursday after suffering a straight-game defeat to world No. 1 An Se Young in the women’s singles Round of 16. The loss came just a week after Sindhu was eliminated by the same opponent in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open, extending her difficult run against the South Korean shuttler.

Sindhu went down 17-21, 14-21 in a contest that lasted through competitive but inconsistent exchanges. The match began on even terms, with both players locked at 10-10 midway through the opening game. Sindhu showed flashes of aggressive strokeplay and attempted to disrupt An’s rhythm with sharper attacks and net play, briefly taking a 15-14 lead.

However, An Se Young, known for her exceptional defensive coverage and endurance, quickly regained control of the first game. The South Korean produced a strong finish, winning key rallies under pressure, including a demanding 41-shot exchange, to move ahead 19-16 and eventually close out the opening game 21-17. Her ability to absorb pressure and convert long rallies proved decisive in shifting momentum.

In the second game, An carried forward her dominance, using her speed and court control to build an early 13-6 advantage. Sindhu continued to fight back with determination, attempting to reduce the gap through selective aggression and improved placement, but struggled to consistently break through An’s defensive structure.

Despite Sindhu’s efforts to stay in contention and win crucial points in patches, An’s consistency and tactical discipline ensured she maintained control of the match. The South Korean closed out the second game 21-14, securing her place in the quarterfinals and extending Sindhu’s losing streak against her to 10 consecutive matches, underlining the challenge the Indian star continues to face against the world No. 1.
