McIlroy Wins 2026 Masters With 12-Under 276, Beats Scheffler by One Stroke For Sixth Major

McIlroy wins back-to-back Masters titles, earning golf's sixth major championship.

Rory McIlroy clinched his second consecutive The Masters Tournament title on Sunday, securing his sixth major championship after a dramatic final round at Augusta National Golf Club. The world number two overcame early setbacks and a tense finish to join an elite group of golfers who have successfully defended their Masters crown.

McIlroy’s round began on a shaky note, with a double bogey on the fourth hole followed by a bogey on the sixth, putting his lead under immediate threat. However, the 36-year-old responded with remarkable composure, carding four birdies over the next seven holes to regain control. His ability to recover under pressure proved crucial as he navigated a challenging course and stiff competition.

The final moments of the tournament added to the drama, as McIlroy’s errant tee shot on the 18th hole landed near the adjacent fairway, raising doubts about his chances of closing out the win. Demonstrating exceptional skill, he produced a brilliant recovery shot around the trees into a greenside bunker before managing to save bogey and secure victory by a single stroke.

With a final score of 12-under-par 276, McIlroy edged past Scottie Scheffler, who finished one shot behind after a bogey-free weekend and a final-round 68. The win places McIlroy alongside legends such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo as one of the few players to win back-to-back Masters titles.

Following the victory, McIlroy celebrated emotionally, raising his arms in triumph before embracing his family, including his daughter Poppy and wife Erica, near the 18th green. The win also earned him a record prize of $4.5 million, further cementing his status as one of the sport’s leading figures.

Other notable performances included Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Russell Henley, and Cameron Young, who finished tied for third place. McIlroy’s triumph marks another milestone in his illustrious career, reinforcing his legacy in the history of golf.
