IPL 2026: Phil Salt Scores 78 Off 36 as RCB Beat Mumbai Indians by 18 Runs at Wankhede

Phil Salt's 78 off 36 powered RCB to an 18-run win over Mumbai Indians on Sunday.

Phil Salt delivered a standout performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their 18-run victory over Mumbai Indians in an Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Sunday but remained grounded about his form after the match. Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Salt acknowledged the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, stating that success often comes with “a few highs and a lot of lows" and emphasized the importance of maintaining mental balance.

Reflecting on his innings, Salt said he focuses on staying consistent in his approach rather than chasing perfection. He highlighted the importance of being impactful whenever possible, noting that not every game guarantees runs but contributing meaningfully to the team’s success is what matters most. His remarks underscored the challenges of maintaining consistency in the fast-paced T20 format, where performance fluctuations are common.

Salt also spoke about his aggressive batting mindset, particularly on high-scoring pitches. He stressed that modern T20 cricket demands constant pressure on the opposition, especially on surfaces that offer little assistance to bowlers. According to him, players must trust their strengths and play with intent, aiming to influence the game decisively whenever opportunities arise.

The match itself saw RCB post a formidable total of 240/4 after opting to bat first. Salt led the charge with a blistering 78 off 36 balls, while Virat Kohli contributed a steady 50 and skipper Rajat Patidar smashed a quickfire 53 off just 20 deliveries. The innings was capped off by a late cameo from Tim David, who added crucial runs in the final overs, helping RCB set a daunting target.

In response, Mumbai Indians began strongly, with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton providing a solid start. However, Rohit’s early exit due to a hamstring injury disrupted their momentum. Despite a valiant unbeaten 71 off 31 balls by Sherfane Rutherford, MI fell short, finishing at 222/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

RCB’s bowlers delivered timely breakthroughs to keep the chase in check, with Suyash Sharma emerging as the standout performer. The victory marked an important result for Bengaluru in the ongoing season, showcasing both their batting depth and ability to defend big totals, while Salt’s performance reinforced his growing influence in the team’s campaign.
