Lionel Messi Takes Indefinite Break From Football After Father's Death

Lionel Messi has taken an indefinite break from competitive football following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, with no date set for the Inter Miami captain's return. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Messi travelled to Argentina earlier this week to be with his family and attend his father's funeral after Jorge Messi died on Friday.

The 39-year-old forward was in South Florida preparing for Inter Miami's upcoming Leagues Cup fixture against Monterrey when he received news of his father's death. He subsequently travelled by private flight to his hometown of Rosario for a private funeral service with family members. Inter Miami has reportedly given Messi full support and allowed him to remain in Argentina for as long as he needs.

The club has not set a timetable for Messi's return to the United States or competitive action. His availability for Inter Miami's upcoming fixtures will depend entirely on when he feels ready to return to football. The decision comes as Messi was beginning to regain his best physical form after recently returning to action.

Jorge Messi played a significant role throughout his son's extraordinary football career. He was not only Messi's father but also served as his manager, representative and adviser from the early stages of his career in Rosario. His involvement continued as Messi developed into one of the most successful footballers in history and eventually became a world champion with Argentina.

Messi's absence temporarily interrupts an impressive spell in North American football. Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, he has scored 92 goals in 107 appearances across Major League Soccer, Concacaf competitions, the Leagues Cup and domestic cup matches. He had recently produced a two-goal performance against Atlético San Luis in the Leagues Cup as he continued to make an impact for the club.

Messi's broader career statistics are equally remarkable, with his total tally reportedly standing at 921 goals, leaving him 79 goals short of the much-discussed 1,000-goal milestone. However, those achievements have taken a back seat following the death of his father. For now, Messi remains in Rosario with his family, and his return to Inter Miami will depend on his personal readiness rather than a fixed schedule.
