Inter Miami Beat Montreal 1-0; Berterame Suffers Head Injury

Inter Miami extended their winning run in Major League Soccer with a 1-0 victory over CF Montreal on Saturday despite the continued absence of Lionel Messi. Luis Suarez scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot late in the match, while Brazilian midfielder Casemiro made his debut for the club following his recent move from Manchester United. The contest was overshadowed by a serious head injury suffered by Inter Miami forward German Berterame.

The most concerning moment of the match came after Berterame collided with Montreal defender Efrain Morales while contesting an aerial ball. The Mexican international fell heavily to the ground and remained motionless, prompting players from both teams to immediately call for medical assistance. Following lengthy treatment on the field, Berterame was taken away in an ambulance, bringing the game to a temporary halt.

Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos later confirmed that Berterame was conscious and in a stable condition. He said the player's family had been informed and described the incident as a desperate situation for everyone involved. After play resumed, Suarez converted the resulting penalty in the 81st minute and celebrated by holding up Berterame's jersey in a gesture of support for his injured teammate.

The goal continued Suarez's impressive scoring form, with the Uruguayan striker netting his sixth goal in his last three matches to take his tally for the season to nine. Casemiro, a five-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid and a veteran of 91 appearances for Brazil, impressed on his MLS debut by controlling the midfield, although both teams struggled to convert their chances throughout the contest.

Lionel Messi and Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul missed their second consecutive league match as they continue to rest following Argentina's defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final last weekend. Major League Soccer also confirmed that Messi will not be required to participate in next week's MLS All-Star Game, allowing him additional recovery time before returning to club action.

The victory marked Inter Miami's sixth consecutive league win and their second since the resumption of MLS following the World Cup break. The club now sits just two points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Orlando City. Elsewhere, Chicago Fire, featuring new signing Robert Lewandowski, fell 3-1 to New York City FC, with Agustin Ojeda, Nicolas Fernandez and Malachi Jones scoring for the home side, while Joel Waterman netted Chicago's only goal.
