Leeds United: Penalty Shoot-Out Hero Perri Sends Club to FA Cup Semis After 39 Years

Leeds beat West Ham on penalties, ending a 39-year FA Cup semi-final drought.

Leeds United secured a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 39 years after defeating West Ham United in a dramatic penalty shoot-out on Sunday. The thrilling encounter at the London Stadium saw Leeds squander a two-goal lead before ultimately prevailing 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time. The result marks a significant milestone for the Yorkshire club, which last reached this stage of the competition in 1987.

Managed by Daniel Farke, Leeds appeared to be cruising toward victory after taking control of the match through Ao Tanaka’s first-half strike and a second-half penalty converted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. However, West Ham staged a dramatic late comeback as Mateus Fernandes pulled one back in stoppage time before Axel Disasi equalised moments later to force the game into extra time, stunning the travelling Leeds supporters.

Despite the late collapse, Leeds regrouped during extra time and held their nerve in the ensuing penalty shoot-out. Goalkeeper Lucas Perri emerged as the hero, saving efforts from Jarrod Bowen and Pablo while Leeds converted four of their penalties. Although Joel Piroe missed the opening spot-kick, successful conversions from Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, and Pascal Struijk ensured Leeds advanced to the final four.

The victory sets up a high-profile semi-final clash against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium later this month. Speaking after the match, Farke acknowledged the team’s resilience, stating that Leeds “always do it the tough way” but praised their composure under pressure. He described the win as a historic moment for the club and a deserved reward for the players and supporters.

This run in the FA Cup provides a timely boost for Leeds amid a challenging domestic campaign in the Premier League. Both Leeds and West Ham remain locked in a relegation battle, with only a few matches remaining in the season. The two sides are also scheduled to meet again in a potentially decisive league fixture on the final day, adding further significance to their ongoing rivalry.

Historically, Leeds have endured mixed fortunes at Wembley, having lost their last three appearances at the venue, including the 2024 Championship play-off final. Their only FA Cup triumph dates back to 1972, and their last win at Wembley came in the 1992 Charity Shield against Liverpool. This latest victory, achieved under intense pressure and dramatic circumstances, signals renewed hope for the club as they chase silverware and aim to secure their top-flight status.
